4 Home Building Tips for Families

Young families or those who plan to start a family may want to build their new home with an eye toward the future. Finding just the right site and floor plan means that your home can adapt to fit your family’s needs for many years to come. With that in mind, reflect upon these four home-building tips for families.

1. Allow Room for Growth

By “growth,” we refer to both the size of your family and the sizes of your family members.

Small children need room to run and play. Young families may want to look for a lot where they can have a bigger backyard. Inside the home, having a designated playroom or a finished basement could be the answer to toys and clutter.

That extra living space comes in handy as your children grow. A playroom can morph into a game room or a place for your teens. Having a large living room or a finished basement may come in handy when they want to entertain their friends.

2. Practical Considerations

As children grow, their physical size increases. Suddenly, you may find it a challenge to fit three lanky teenagers around the dining room table. Consider their changing needs; will you have the room (or bathrooms, for that matter) to accommodate several more adult-sized people in your home? And don’t forget to count your pets into the mix! Having a large dog in the house can take up the space of another person.

Before building, try to envision yourself living there in five to ten years. Will it be big enough,? Can you repurpose rooms as your children grow? Planning now can save you from having to move later.

3. Safety

Safety must always be a prime consideration for families with children. You want your kids protected both inside and outside of your new home.

First, consider the location. Is the lot located near busy streets or dangerous intersections? Families looking for a building site should always take advantage of Megan’s Law and check to see if there are registered offenders living nearby.

Inside the home, you should think about the layout. Would an open floor plan make it easier to keep tabs on small children? Where are the bedrooms located and is there an easy egress in case of fire?

4. Location and Schools

Schools are also of primary importance when selecting a building site. Not only should you be concerned about a school’s academic performance but also more mundane considerations such as school bus service and after-school care. Apart from the impact that the school system has on your children’s future, it also figures into the resale value of your home.

Another consideration for families would be parks and amenities. Check to see if there is an outdoor playground or a neighborhood pool near your building site. Is there convenient access to shops and a grocery store?

Building a home that grows with your family requires a bit of advance planning. With that thought for tomorrow, building a new home allows you the flexibility to own the home that best suits your needs.
