Featured Home: Mid-Mod Magic
Toss out the oft-heard term, “Mid-Century Modern,” and thoughts of Hula-Hoops, tie-dye, and Tang may come to mind. Coined in the 1980’s, the term actually refers to the period of time spanning from the 1940’s through the early ‘70’s, and—architecturally speaking—a style that places equal emphasis on both function and form.
This month’s featured plan gives a nod to mid-century design while adding unique modern elements to create a truly one-of-a-kind custom home. Starting with the lower roof lines and interesting angles of the stacked-stone exterior, the home evokes a timeless yet distinguished sense of style.
Enter the home to abundant light in the large entryway leading to the open great room and kitchen. In true mid-mod form, the elements of nature come indoors on the stone wall between the entry and great room, creating a textural focal point. The warm colors in the stone are reflected in the natural hues of the tile surrounding the linear fireplace, the white-washed oak flooring, and the Alder kitchen cabinetry.
Clean, uncomplicated lines of the kitchen design speak to the beauty of simplicity and the successful marriage of form and function. Imagine what you could do with all of that quartz counter-top and seemingly endless cabinet space! Deep windows and patio doors along the back side of the home bring more natural light into the space, enhancing the organic aspects of design.
The stone wall in the entryway extends all the way to the lower level of the home, serving as an anchor point in the open-concept home. A modern, open-riser/closed stringer natural-wood staircase with cable railing becomes another element in the home functioning as both a necessity and a showpiece. The upper deck and lower-level patio on the side of the house extend the already spacious 4,034 sq. ft. living area in the home by an additional 530 sq. ft.
